About

Working in collaboration with architect Chris Muskopf from Cambridge Seven Associates, I designed the gardens for the  new Gloucester Harbor Walk.

I am currently producing documentary films about the Monarch Butterfly, Black Swallowtail Butterfly , and Gloucester’s Feast of St. Joseph.

Kim Smith Designs is my garden and interior design firm. I work in collaboration with clientele to create highly individualized, livable spaces, combining the classic and the modern, the elegant and the playful, and utilize eastern and western cultural influences to further develop and refine design projects. My love of textiles, art, and furnishings drew me to interior design and passion for flowers and butterflies to garden design. I specialize in connecting the home to the home outside and in creating gardens for people and pollinators (butterflies, hummingbirds, songbirds, and bees), with a focus on native trees and shrubs, wildflowers, and fragrant plants. For information about lectures and workshops that I teach, design work, current projects, exhibits, and events, feel free to email me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com, click on the Programs and Events pages, or visit my website at Kim Smith Designs.

In conjunction with my design practice, I am currently creating and developing several film projects: life stories about both the Monarch and Black Swallowtail butterflies, and a third film made especially for my Cape Ann community. All three documentaries were filmed in gardens and along the shores of Cape Ann. My first film, titled The Butterfly Garden at Willowdale Estate, is a thirty minute narrated film that features the Butterfly Garden at Willowdale that I designed, and serves as the background for an illustrated guide in how to create a garden for people and pollinators. When you plant for the pollinators, they will come!
